What was your latest post? How many likes did you get? Did you get any comments?
Most people's daily activities involve social media. Constantly checking it, making sure to not miss anything. It's the addiction of the twenty first century.
Social media, what is it?
According to Dictionary.com, it's websites and other online means of communication used by large groups of people to share information.
Listening to the podcast Status Update, you hear three young girls reacting to their social media likes and comments. During the prologue, the girls are waiting for friends, strangers, whomever to acknowledge their photo. They discuss what people comment like, "WTF you're so pretty!"
While listening to the girls commentary, it was eye opening how worried they are about their likes. One girl acknowledges that they got six likes in one minute. That was impressive to them.
This resonates with me; I'm also a millennial girl. I understand their feelings about making sure they get so many likes, or else that's a bad picture and it needs to go. They talk about certain comments they get, another example is "OMG can I be you?" Personally, I always comment on friends posts. Usually I say, "Love!!" Or "What a beauty!" Just things I know, make any girl feel good! That's all we want to do, just let our girlfriends know how gorgeous they are.
The host of the podcast, brings up how their parents don't understand why fifty people need to say how pretty the girls are. This just shows our current society. Many people want to lift each other up, they do this by commenting positive things. There will always be people who want to dampen these positive reactions. Still, doesn't stop this generation from trying to make online interactions encouraging.
During Act One: Finding the Self in Selfie, they discuss how nerve racking it is to even post a photo. The girls have to show and get someone's opinion on their selfie, before they reveal it to all their followers on Instagram.

Status Update, gave me more realization to how incredibly engaged this young generation is with social media. Everyday, we focus on likes, comments, any form of online interaction. It consumes people. Not saying it's a negative thing! It's making teens feel comfortable in their skin. Friends are showing friends love. People can utilize this as a chance to create encouragement everywhere.
Well organized and thoughtful post.
